BMW Photo Space에서는 2016년 세 번째 靑사진 프로젝트로 양호상의 《Reality X Reality》를 8월 16일부터 10월 1일까지 선보인다.
현대사회는 이윤추구를 목적으로 하는 자본주의를 중심으로 형성된다. 자본이 지배하는 경제체계 안에서 사회는 개인이 아닌 대중에 집중되어 있으며, 경제에 의해 운용되는 대중의 소비는 사회의 공통된 욕망을 드러낸다. 이 같은 현대사회구조 안에서 양호상은 개별성을 지우고 자본에 종속되어가는 현대인의 삶을 인간의 생활 요소인 의복과 주거공간을 이용해 이미지화한다. 《Reality X Reality》는 현실의 실재하는 대상을 복제해 현대사회의 표상을 드러내는 양호상의 <Stereogram>(2012-2014) 그리고 신작 <Diffused Scene>(2011-2016)으로 구성된다. 이번 전시는 이를 통해 현대인이 일상생활에서 추구하는 욕망의 실체를 탐구하고자 한다.
현대 사회에서 의복은 개인의 사회적 정체성과 개성을 상징한다는 과거의 말이 무색할 만큼 대중이 되기 위한 필수품으로써, 대중의 복제 상징물이 되었다. 양호상은 시대의 흐름에 따라 변화되는 의복의 사회적 성격과 그 성격 안에 감춰져 있는 현대인의 의식을 <Stereogram>(2012-2014)을 통해 나타낸다. 이 시리즈는 국내에서 생산되기 시작한 1950년대부터 유행이 제작에 반영되기 시작한 1970년대의 기성복을 오브제로 촬영하고 그 옷의 패턴을 복제해 오브제의 배경으로 삽입한 작업이다. 촬영 대상을 선정하는 기준이 되는 옷의 생산시기는 ‘사용가치’에서 ‘상징가치’로 옮겨가는 소비의 흐름을 드러낸다. 그리고 그 흐름 안에서 개인을 떠나 대중화되는 현대인의 모습을 패턴 안에 형상이 은폐되는 의복으로 알레고리화하는 것이다.
신작 <Diffused Scene>(2011-2016)는 어떠한 장소에서 나타나는 생활양식과 그에 관련된 사회문화적 의미를 내포하고 있는 주거공간을 통해 한국 사회의 가치관을 이야기한다. 이 시리즈는 아파트 단지와 재건축 현장, 일반주택 등 인간이 삶을 영위하는 주거공간을 촬영하고 재편집하여 가상의 장면을 만들어낸 작업이다. 반세기 남짓한 시간 동안 많은 변화를 거쳐 우리 사회의 대표적 주거공간이 된 아파트는 빠른 속도로 우리 주변을 가득 채우고 있다. 그리고 양호상이 만들어낸 끝없이 이어지는 아파트 건설 현장의 장막과 개발을 기다리고 있는 자연을 둘러싼 아파트 장벽의 스펙터클을 담아낸 허구의 장면들은 이러한 현실을 더욱 극대화 한다.
현대인은 정치적, 경제적, 사회문화적 요소들에 영향을 받으며 살아가고 있다. 하지만 산업화와 도시화를 거친 세계가 동일한 모습을 가지고 있지 않듯이, 세계는 모든 사회구성원들에게 동일한 가치관을 요구하지 않는다. 그럼에도 불구하고 자신이 원하는 것보다 대중의 시선을 의식하고 결정하는 우리 사회의 가치관은 자신이 아닌 제 3의 매개자를 통해 욕망을 일으키는 ‘르네 지라르의 욕망의 삼각형’ 형태를 가지고 있다. 이처럼 우리 사회의 이질적인 형태를 양호상은 <Stereogram>에서 자신을 은폐 함으로써 대중에 소속되려는 현대인의 개인적 욕망을, 그리고 <Diffused Scene>에서는 반복적으로 드러나는 도시의 스펙터클을 통해 외적으로 부각되는 한국 사회의 도시적 욕망을 표현한다.

The modern society is formed based on pursuit of profit, centering around capitalism. In this economic system controlled by capital, the society focuses on the mass and not the individual, and the mass consumption, regulated by the economy, reveals the society’s shared desire. The artist visualizes the lives of the modern people within such social structure that have been stripped of individuality and have subordinated to capital, through capturing elements of daily life, including clothing and residential space. 《Reality X Reality》 constitutes of Yang’s previous work 'Stereogram'(2012-2014), which represents the modern society by reproducing a subject in reality, and his new work, 'Diffused Scene'(2011-2016). The exhibit aims to investigate the nature of desire pursued by moderns in their daily lives.
Almost overshadowing the idea from the past that clothing signifies individual’s social distinctive identity, clothing in the modern society has become a requirement to participate in the mass and an emblem of reproduction. Through 'Stereogram'(2012-2014), HoSang Yang reveals the social nature of clothing that transforms along with the course of time and the moderns’ consciousness that hides within such quality of clothing. This series is a work that photographs clothings from the 1950s when manufacture first began in Korea to 1970s when ready-mades began to reflect the contemporary trend, and inserts the identical pattern of the clothings as the objet’s background. Selecting clothes based on the time of production, the process unveils the course of consumption that began to assess the symbolic value rather than the utility value. Thus, Yang makes an allegory by presenting clothes as individual’s form that is suppressed by the public and the mass.
His new work, 'Diffused Scene'(2011-2016), illustrates values of Korean society through photographing residential space that connote certain modes of living as well as sociocultural meaning. This series is a work that has captured a regular living space re-edited into an imagined scene. Within the last half of the century, apartments have undergone numerous changes to surround us as the representative residential space in our society. And Yang’s fictional scenes of apartments with pavilions in waiting to be developed and transformed, and the spectacles that unfold beyond the walls of the apartments rather intensify our reality.
Moderns live everyday affected by the political, economical and sociocultural factors. However, as various societies that have all underwent industrialization and urbanization do not appear in same form, the world does not request for the same values from the constituting people. Even so, the values of our society reveal a form similar to René Girard’s mimetic desire, as we decide our actions in consciousness of the public’s gaze rather than in our own determination. Through 'Stereogram', HoSang Yang expresses the modern people’s desire to become part of the mass by suppressing their individuality, and the urban desire of Korean society that appear in the city’s repetitive spectacles through 'Diffused Scene'.
