BMW Photo Space는 라이카 스토어 해운대의 후원으로 20세기 현대사진의 맥락을 잇는 미국의 대표적 사진가 랄프 깁슨의 전시 《MONO》를 국내 처음 선보인다(2016년 6월 17일 ~ 8월 10일). 작가와 LEICA의 공동 프로젝트 <MONO>(2013-2014)는, LEICA M Monochrome으로 10개국을 촬영한 랄프 깁슨의 첫 디지털 사진 시리즈이다. 1970년대 이후 아날로그 사진만을 고집해온 랄프 깁슨에게 이 디지털 작업은 새로운 사진언어의 확장이자 미학적 변화이기도 하다. 이번 전시에서는 이러한 작가의 의식이 반영된 디지털 <MONO>시리즈 작품 50여 점과 그에 대비되는 초기 아날로그 작업을 함께 전시함으로써, 디지털 시대 사진의 새로운 가능성을 제시하고자 한다.
랄프 깁슨은 대상의 사진적 재현을 넘어 자신의 내적 심리 혹은 의식의 이면을 표현해내는 독창적인 스타일을 구축해왔다. 대상의 클로즈업과 명암대비를 통해 만들어지는 새로운 형태는 현실을 반영하지만 곧 현실을 벗어난 비현실적 장면으로 치환되어 이중 구조를 만들어 낸다. 이러한 작업으로 나타나는, 추상적인 장면 또는 빛과 대상의 선적인 요소를 이용한 기하학적 프레임의 재구성은 랄프 깁슨의 대표적 사진요소가 된다.
<MONO>에서 랄프 깁슨은 내면과 무의식의 세계를 표현했던 이전의 사진과 일관된 작업태도를 보인다. 반면, 대상의 비현실적 장면을 드러내고자 했던 이전 작업과는 달리 현실적 대상 그 자체를 프레임 속에 담아낸다. 이 차이는 아날로그의 기술적 한계를 극복한 디지털메커니즘으로 인해 인간의 시각 한계를 넘어 이미지를 수용할 수 있게 된 매체의 장점을 적극적으로 활용한 결과이다. 이로써 랄프 깁슨의 작업에 있어 디지털로 변환된 매체의 성질은, 촬영대상의 비현실성뿐만 아니라 현실적 요소에서 또한 미학적 활용의 대상이 된 것을 확인할 수 있다.
모든 언어가 사회적 코드를 통해 상호 관계를 맺듯이, 이미지 또한 사물 사이의 유기적 관계를 작동시킨다. 하지만 디지털로 변화된 이미지는 물리적 제약을 받지 않고 끊임 없이 이동하는 신호로 확장된다. 랄프 깁슨은 <MONO>에서 이러한 디지털 매체가 어떠한 제한이나 영향 없이 이미지를 생산해내는 ‘개별성’과 이 성질을 통해 만들어지는 매체의 ‘비현실성’을, 현실적 대상을 등장시킴으로써 역설적으로 드러내고 있다. 디지털의 등장과 발전은 매체예술의 기술과 근본적 성질을 변화시켰고, 그 변화로 인해 우리는 무한의 공간과 시간, 이미지를 경험할 수 있게 되었다. 랄프 깁슨의 <MONO>는 테크놀로지의 변화로 인해 매체예술의 속성이 잘 드러난 한 사례로 볼 수 있을 것이다.
With support of LEICA store haeundae, BMW Photo Space presents the 《MONO》 of Ralph Gibson, one of America's leading photographers, who connects the context of 20th century modern photography from June 17th to August 10th of 2016, for the first time in Korea. ‘MONO’(2013-2014) is a collaborative project of the artist and LEICA. Also, this is the first digital photography series of Ralph Gibson that photographed in 10 countries by LEICA M Monochrome. Ralph Gibson has stuck to analogue photography after 1970s and this digital work is an extension of photographic language and aesthetic change. In this exhibition, we will show 50 new digital 'MONO' series works reflecting the consciousness of the artist and his early analogue works together, to show the new possibilities of digital age photography.
Ralph Gibson has built an original style that expresses the inner side of his mind or consciousness, beyond transcendent of photographic representation of the subject. The new form created by close-up and contrast of the object reflects the reality but soon creates a dual structure by replacing it with an unrealistic scene that is out of reality. The reconstruction of the geometric frame, which is an abstract scene or a shipment of light and objects, is a representative photographic element of Ralph Gibson.
In ‘MONO’, Ralph Gibson shows consistent working style with previous works that presented inner side and subconscious world. On the other hand, contrary to the previous work which tried to reveal the unrealistic scene of the object, it puts the actual object itself in the frame. This difference is the result of actively utilizing the advantages of the medium that has been able to accommodate images beyond human visual limitations thanks to the digital mechanism that overcomes the technical limitations of analog. By this, we can confirm that the nature of the digitalized media in Ralph Gibson's work has become a subject of aesthetics, in reality as well as non-reality of the object being photographed.
As all languages correlates through social codes, images also activate organic relationships between things. But digitalized images are extended to the signal that moving continually and not being interrupted by physical condition. In ‘MONO’, Ralph Gibson reveals ‘unreality’ of medium, which was come from the 'individuality' that digital media produces images without any limitations or influences, by presenting realistic object. Appearance and development of digital technology changed art’s fundamental nature, and because of the change, we can experience infinite space, time and images. ‘MONO’ of Ralph Gibson is a good case that can show us how the characteristic of media arts is evident because of the changes in technology.
