자연은 어느 순간 어떻게 풍경이 되었을까? 풍경화와 마찬가지로 풍경사진 역시 인간의 시선을 통해 자연을 다양한 방식으로 의미화해왔다. 이정록은 자연에 덧씌워진 인간의 시선 너머 원형 그대로의 자연을 탐구하고, 이를 토대로 자신만의 풍경을 일관되게 구축해오고 있다. 그의 작업은 인간의 일방적인 시선에서 벗어나 새로운 풍경을 생산하는 행위이자, 자연과 시선을 나누고 공명하는 과정이다. 이는 동양의 관점에서 자연을 대하는 태도이기도 한데, 자연을 실용적 관점에서 바라보는 것이 아니라 조화와 합일의 관점에서 바라보는 것이다.

자연에 대한 이러한 태도는 이미 이정록의 초기 작업에서 예견된 바 있다. 그는 자연의 생명력에 대한 관심과 탐구의 결과물인 <남녘땅>과 <갯벌>, <들빛>, <숨> 시리즈에서 자연의 순환과 순리를 관조하면서 그것의 에너지를 드러내는 방식에 주목했다. 그 이후의 작업인 <신화적 풍경>, <사적 성소>, <생명나무> 시리즈는 거기서 더 나아가 에너지를 뿜어내는 자연의 원형에 대한 탐구로 이어졌다. 자신에게 특별하게 다가오는 장소를 상상력을 발휘하여 눈에 보이지 않는 정신적이고 영적인 흔적으로서의 풍경, 생명의 에너지가 넘치는 새로운 풍경으로 재탄생시킨 것이다.

특히 <생명나무>는 이정록의 상상력이 가장 압축적으로 구성된 풍경이다. 가장 적절한 빛과 공기감을 만들어내기 위해 오랜 시간 공들인 수고는 새로운 풍경의 지표를 보여준다. 펼쳐진 장면으로서의 풍경에서 그 안의 요소들이 신비한 기운을 내뿜고 있는 일종의 배치된 풍경으로의 전환인 셈이다. 나무, 빛은 이정록의 말대로 여러 차원의 세계를 연결하는 하나의 매개체이다. 오랜 시간을 기다려 생성된 생명의 풍경은 우리의 상상을 실현시켜주는 동시에 보이지 않는 세계의 또 다른 풍경의 가능성을 제시한다. 빛을 통해 대상에 아름다움과 동시에 그것을 넘어서는 생명력을 불어넣는 이 과정은 의도하지 않았음에도 탁월한 미적 전략이 된다.

<Decoding Scape>는 여기서 한 걸음 더 나아가 보이지 않는 근원적 세계를 나름의 언어로 형상화하면서 소통과 합일을 추구한다. 자연의 정신을 인간의 언어로 드러내는 행위는 어떻게 자연을 인식하고 자연과 조화를 이루어나갈 것인가에 대한 이정록의 집요한 문제의식이 그대로 담겨 있다. 그가 작가노트에서 밝힌 것처럼 자신에게 풍경은 눈앞에 펼쳐진 장면이 아니라 그것을 통해 인간의 내면에서 생성되는 이미지 현상이기 때문이다. 이제 그의 시선은 빛이라는 신호에서 언어라는 기호로 넘어가게 된다. 는 음양오행 사상과 천지인이라는 삼재론의 원리로 만들어진 훈민정음을 통해 자연과 풍경의 의미를 풀어내고자 했다. 그런 의미에서 <Decoding Scape>는 <생명나무>와 함께 이정록의 풍경을 바라보는 시선과 풍경을 읽어내는 관점이 응집되어 나타난 결과물인 셈이다.

그래서 이번 BMW PHOTO SPACE 개관전 《See the Unseen》에서는 풍경 위에 이정록이 상상으로 써 내려간 원형의 메시지를 통해 풍경의 함의를 짚어보고자 한다. 풍경을 언어로 해독하여 그 본질을 읽어내고 풍경과의 소통을 시도하는 이정록의 행위는 인식 이전의 근원을 찾고자 한 초기 작업의 고민과 맞닿아 있다. 뿐만 아니라 소유의 개념에서 시작된 풍경의 개념이 어떠한 방식으로 진화되어가야 하는지도 분명하게 보여주고 있다. 이정록은 자신이 만들어낸 암시적 풍경을 통해 자연에 풍경을 돌려주는 법, 다른 시선으로 새로운 풍경을 만들어내는 법 그리고 자연과 소통하고 공명하는 법을 제시한다. 이번 전시는 눈에 보이지 않는 세계와 존재의 근원을 형상화한 기호로서의 <생명나무>와 그 근원을 “마음 속에 그려지는 언어로 형상화”한 <Decoding Scape>를 통해 이정록이 풍경에게 말을 건네고 소통하는 과정을 확인해보는 시간이 될 것이다. 이는 풍경을 읽는 또 하나의 방법이기도 하다.





At what moment did nature become a landscape? Like landscape paintings, landscape photography has also made sense of nature in various ways through human gaze. JeongLok Lee has been constructing his own landscape consistently based on his studying the original nature as it is beyond the human gaze overlaid on nature. His work is a process of producing a new landscape that deviates from the unilateral gaze of human beings and also a process of sharing and resonating with nature. It is also an attitude toward nature in the perspective of the orient, not from a practical point of view, but from the point of view of harmony and unity.

This attitude to nature has already been predicted in the early work of JeongLok Lee. He focused on the way of revealing its energy by contemplating the circulation and naturalness of nature in the series of <South Land>, <Tide Land>, <Breath> and <Field Light>. After that, <Mythical Landscape>, <Private Sanctuary>, and <Tree of Life> series led to further exploration of the original pattern of energy that emanates energy. It is a re-birth of a place that comes into its own with imagination, a landscape as an invisible mental and spiritual trail, and a new landscape full of life energy.

Especially, <Tree of Life> is a scene where the imagination of Lee JeongLok Lee is composed most compressively. A long-time effort to create the most appropriate light and air sensation reveals a new landscape. It is a transition from a landscape as an unfolded scene to a sort of arranged landscape in which the elements in it emit a mysterious aura. As he said, trees and light are a medium that connects the worlds of various dimensions. The scenery of life created through a long wait realizes our imagination and presents the possibility of another landscape of the invisible world. This process of infusing the beauty and the vitality beyond it into the object through light becomes an aesthetic strategy that is unintended.

<Decoding Scape> seeks communication and unity while symbolizing the invisible fundamental world in its own language. The act of revealing the spirit of nature in the human language contains the intrinsic problem consciousness of how to recognize nature and be in harmony with it. As he explained in his notes, landscape is not an image unfolding before his eyes, but an image phenomenon created from the inside of human beings through it. Now his gaze is passed from the sign of light to the symbol of language. He tried to solve the meaning of nature and landscape through Hunminjeongum, which was made up of the principles of Yin and Yang five lines and Tianjin three elements. In this sense, <Decoding Scape> and <Tree of Life> are results of cohesion of JeongLok Lee’s viewpoint of landscape and perspective to read landscape.

So, in 《See the Unseen》, the opening exhibition of BMW PHOTO SPACE, we want to take a look at the implications of landscape through a circular message written on the scenery. This act of deciphering the landscape by language, reading its essence and trying to communicate with the landscape, is in contact with the worries of the early work to find the source before the recognition. In addition, it clearly shows how the concept of landscape that started from the concept of ownership evolves. JeongLok Lee presents the method of returning landscape to nature through the implicit scenery created by himself, creating new scenery with different eyes, and communicating and resonating with nature. In this exhibition, we can know how he talk to nature and communicate with it through the <Tree of Life> as a sign symbolizing the invisible world and the origin of existence, and the <Decoding Scape> symbolizing its origin as a language drawn in the mind. This is also the other way to read landscape.
