부산 해운대에 위치한 BMW PHOTO SPACE는 고은사진미술관이 후원하고 BMW 동성모터스에서 운영하는 사진전문전시관으로 다양한 국내외 기획전시를 통해 한국사진의 스펙트럼을 넓히고자 2015년 개관했다. BMW PHOTO SPACE는 한국의 신진작가를 발굴, 지원하는 ‘靑사진 프로젝트’와 해외의 새로운 사진경향을 소개하는 ‘해외 신진작가 교류전’을 통해 한국의 젊은 작가들이 해외에 진출 할 수 있는 폭 넓은 국제교류가 이루어 지도록 지원 할 것이다. 2015년 첫 번째 해외 신진 작가 교류전으로 일본의 쿠라 마스미(Masumi Kura)의 《Adventures of Kura》전이 2015년 4월3일부터 2015년 6월 3일 까지 열린다.
1975년 일본 도야마현에서 출생한 쿠라 마스미(Masumi Kura)는 도시샤대학교에서 영문학을 전공한 이후, 도쿄시각예술대학교의 사진과에 재입학하며 사진을 시작했다. 2001년 첫 개인전을 시작으로 상해미술관, 신주쿠 니콘 살롱, 동경도 사진미술관 등에서 다수의 전시를 가졌다. 2011년에는 일본의 대표적인 신진작가 사진상 ‘사가미하라시 종합사진제’에서 장려상을 수상하는 등 현재 일본의 촉망 받는 신진작가로 주목 받고 있다. 이번 BMW PHOTO SPACE에서 열리는 《Adventures of Kura》는 쿠라 마스미의 한국에서 첫 개인전으로 2003년부터 10여 년간 동경에서 이세를 거쳐 교토, 오사카를 이동하며 촬영한 ‘Adventures of Kura’ 시리즈로 구성된다.
‘Adventures of Kura’시리즈에서 쿠라 마스미는 순간적인 장면들 속에서 촬영 대상의 자연스런 동작이나 표정을 잡아내는 스냅방식을 취한다. 그녀의 스냅은 역동적이기 보다는 정적이며 강렬한 언어적 구조보다는 무표정한 일상의 영상적 구조이다. 이러한 표현 방식은 사회적 영향력과 발언권을 가지고 사회의 변화를 요구했던 일본의 전후 리얼리즘 사진들과는 현저한 차이를 보여준다. 일본 사진역사의 중심축이었던 사진리얼리즘 운동은 급변하는 도시의 모습을 과감하고 역동적으로 담아내어 현대사회의 메마르고 건조한 소외의식을 심층적으로 드러내고자 했었다. 모리야마 다이도를 중심으로 한 이러한 사진의 방법론들은 여전히 일본사진 속에서 유의미한 영역을 차지하고 진화를 거듭하고 있는 중이다.
이세신궁 순례길을 따라 이어지는 쿠라 마스미의 스냅은 대상을 향해 적극적인 접근을 하지도, 그렇다고 관조 하지도 않는다. 그저 대상과 담담하게 중립적인 거리를 유지할 뿐이다. 그녀는 객관적으로 대상을 대하면서도 우연히 떠오르는 자신의 기억 사이를 전제로 대상과의 거리를 조정한다. 이런 거리조정방식은 사진 속에 등장하는 대상과 작가와의 관계에 대한 상상으로 이어지고 관객의 시선을 대상에 집중시키는 효과를 유발한다. 그녀가 낯선 장소의 낯선 사람에게 낯설지 않은 얼굴을 떠올린 것처럼, 관람객 역시 사실과 기억이 중첩된 이 사진들을 통해 각자 자신만의 기억을 떠올리게 될 것이다.
BMW PHOTO SPACE is the photo specialty space located at Haeundae-gu, Busan that is supported by GoEun Museum of Photography and is operated by BMW Dongsung Motors. It was opened in 2015 to broaden the spectrum of Korean photography through various special exhibitions, arranged domestically and internationally. BMW PHOTO SPACE aims for several goals 'Chung(靑) Photo Project' which seeks and supports rising artists in Korea, 'Exchange Exhibition of the International Rising Artist' which introduces the current trend of international photography. Therefore, it overall provides the wide interchangeable relationship that the young Korean artists could maintain and the pedestal that they could further step on. As for the first exchange exhibition of the international rising artist, Masumi Kura's 《Adventures of Kura》 is featuring from April 3rd, 2015 to June 3rd, 2015.
Masumi Kura was born in Toyama, Japan in 1975. She studied English at Doshisha University and went back to Tokyo Visual Arts to learn photography. After featuring her first solo exhibition in 2001, she had numerous exhibitions at Shanghai Art Museum, Shinjuku Nikon Salon, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, and etc. In 2011, Kura was awarded at Photo City Sagamihara that is the representative photography award for the rising artists in Japan and she continuously accumulated recognition for the rising artist of Japan. 《Adventures of Kura》 is her first solo exhibition in Korea. This exhibition consists the series of Adventures of Kura, which is the collection of her photographs taken from 2003 while traveling along from Tokyo to Ise, Kyoto, and Osaka for 10 years.
In the series 'Adventures of Kura', Masumi Kura captures natural postures and facial expressions from instant moments. Her snap shots are static rather than energetic besides, those are the iconic structures of faceless routines rather than strong linguistic structure. Her way of expressing these works shows the noticeable difference between the photographs from Realism period of Japan which demanded the social changes with having the social influence and right to speak. Japanese Photo-Realism Movement that was the core of the photography history of Japan tried to dynamically reveal the image of rapidly changing city so that overall depicts the layers of the parched idea of alienation of the modern society. These kinds of photographical theories with Daido Moriyama as the center are still the significant part in the photography of Japan while progressing.
Continuing along the route of Isejingu Shrine, the snap shots of Masumi Kura does not immediately approach to the object or contemplate it. She only sustains the neutral distance between her and the object. She subjectively deals with the object, and adjusts the distance of it based on the memory of herself, which coincidentally pops up in her mind. Her way of adjusting the distance causes the attention that the sight of the viewer could solely focus on the object. Like she thought of a stranger's face from a certain stranger at a strange place, the viewer would recall his or her own memory with this photo of duplicated fact and memory.
