2016.10.04 ~ 2016.12.11
BMW Photo Space
For the forth photography project of 2016, the BMW Photo Space presents 《Visible thing, Invisible thing》 by YoungChuel Ji from October 4th to December 11th.
'Seeing' includes not only recognizing the existence or form of the object in the retina of the eye but also recognizing it as various images by inner consciousness and unconsciousness. This means that, even if we look at the same object, each visual sensation responds to a different subjective image depending on the experience or judgment of the individual.
'Seeing' is, in the end, the most obvious manifestation of individual consciousness and perspective. And it is also a clue to see the common consciousness of ideas formed by the social environment, while at the same time revealing the individuality. This exhibition is talking about the ideology requested by Korean social structure and seeing method implanted by society, through YoungChuel Ji’s new works, 'Sampalseon'(2012-2016) and 'Group'(2014-2016).
'Sampalseon', taken at 3.8 degrees north latitude of domestic and abroad, is the first project that reflects his interest in the difference between concept and reality. The name of the 38th parallel, which is often referred to as the boundary of division in Korea, is the regional baseline for the Soviet Union and the United States to rule the Korean Peninsula on behalf of Japan, which defeated World War II. This line does not physically coincide with the front line, which is the product of the Korean war, but has been mixed with the Military Demarcation Line(MDL) for more than a half century. Ji's work 'Sampalseon' also records the coordinate position that the name refers to, but the boundary traces of the division can’t be found except for a few areas. Only ordinary everyday landscapes of mathematically separated coordinate spaces emerge, rather than the belief and tensions of division that we usually associate with. These are also the result of YoungChuel Ji's performative action to face the reality of the invisible by walking along 3.8 degrees north.
If the above work is a representation created by the difference between the reality and the object of the target, 'Group'is a work that contemplates the participants who move and shoot only in the restricted area designated by the organizer in the domestic photography competition. People appearing in the photographs are keep scattering and gathering to shoot a given subject, but do not leave the group. Ji projects a vision of modern people who do not leave the boundaries without doubt even if the width and moment of choice are given. And at the end of that vision, there is a compulsory social myth which is made of invisible walls. 'Sampalseon' and 'Group' represent different objects, but point to things we believed to be seen and things that we did not believe to be unseen. These two series, started from the human belief about seeing, suggest that these beliefs are being replaced by a range of perspective forced by the ideals sought by society.
